Young Frankenstein, released in 1974 is a comedic-horror movie written by Gene Wilder and directed by Mel Brooks. The movie was filmed entirely in black and white which helps to capture the feeling of the original movies, and even employs some of the original filming styles of the original Universal movies, including using some of the original props from the original Frankenstein movie. Many of the scenes are direct parodies of Bride of Frankenstein, and the original classic movie, but includes other elements and scenes from other movies in the series as well. Honestly this movie does an amazing job at paying homage to the original Frankenstein series. The film tells the story of Frederick Frankenstein the descendant of the legendary Victor Von Frankenstein, who returns to his family's castle and then follows in the footsteps of his relative and creates a monster, with the help of his assistants Igor and Inga. The story is very familiar as like I said it pulls most of its story from the classics, with its own flavour. The movie is heavy in one liners, jokes, and gags, some of which are memorable and often quoted in pop culture. The movie has become a classic in its own right and is almost as loved and remembered as much if not more than the original series of movies. The movie actually does an absolute fantastic job at capturing the feeling of the original style of the movies it was parodying, which is great, because at this time period filming in black and white was rare. So really my thoughts on this movie, is that it is absolutely fantastic, and still holds up today, and many of the jokes are still funny, and the movie is just as enjoyable to watch now as it was when I was a kid. Now my critiques of the film is that it takes place in Transylvania, which is not where Frankenstein took place, but more than that they put Transylvania in Germany, which is also inaccurate as it is Romania, which leads to an inconstancy and almost laziness to it. To me it doesn't make sense to change up these settings, but really that is nit picking, and not that important. But overall it is a really great movie, that will always be a joy to watch, for any fan of classic horror movies, or fans of Mel Brooks style comedy. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, absolutely, I really can't praise this movie enough, it is well done, it is funny, and it brings in so many elements of the classics that it parodies. This should definitely be on everyone's must watch list. So hunt down yourself a copy and either watch it for the first time if you haven't or rewatch it again because this movie never really gets old.
