Us is a horror movie released in 2019. I saw this movie with my best friend last night, and I have been debating whether I should write a review or not, because I had some mixed thoughts on it. First of all, based on the reviews, previews, and what I heard about it, I expected a truly terrifying horror story. That however is NOT what I saw, which I will explain more in a moment. Us starts off in the 1980s with a little girl who goes to the amusement park on the shore with her mom and dad, she wonders off and ends up in the hall of mirrors where the lights go out and she ends up seeing a girl who looks just like her, she gets scared and runs away. The film then transforms to that little girl who grew up and is married with kids (they are a very wealthy family I should add). They go to their summer home near Santa Cruz, and end up going to the same beach to meet up with some friends. Later that night there is a family in their driveway, they can only see the silhouettes of the family, after trying to scare the family away away, the family in the driveway attacks them, and they find out they are them... The movie from here on turns into a proper horror film, with blood and chases, and all that good stuff. They find out that everyone has a duplicate, and that leads up to the exciting climax and the twist at the end. First off, this film feels a lot like Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Secondly I found myself laughing more than feeling any type of fear. There is some great humour in this film, and I think that helped it to be a great film. There was some great writing in this film as well, and the actors were all well cast and they delivered their lines fantastically. There are however some things about the film that just don't make sense, and maybe after I view it a few more times, I will figure those things out, and also I can't really talk about those things without giving anything away, but there are just a few details, kinda technical story points that just don't work out in my head based on the info that we are given in the film. I don't know I might be the only one that even thought about these things, but they were enough to bother me. Overall it is a great film, with a great story, and a great cast. The settings were nothing special, and didn't really set any particular mood for me, so the settings are barely worth discussing. The movie has a nice pace to it, and made it a fun thrill ride. There is a lot of character development with the mother/little girl from the beginning, which is told through a series of flash backs, which are vital to the story. I also love that the leading characters are all black, which is a very deliberate decision by the director, who in an interview stated that he will never cast a white person as his leading actor because in his words "I've seen that film before", alluding to the fact that most movies have a white lead. Would I recommend this film? Yes, definitely go see it while it is in the theater! It is a great movie, and a lot of fun to watch, and has a fantastic twist ending! Definitely worth the $5 I spent to see it in the theater.
