The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, released in 2003 is the third and final installment in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The trilogy ends on such an incredibly high note, with many critics hailing the film as one of the greatest achievements in the history of film making, it was also one of the films to win the most academy awards in the history of film making. Critics nearly all agree that this is one of the greatest films of all-time (and for once I wholeheartedly agree with them). At this point I no longer cared how closely it followed the book, because after over six hours of movies leading up to it, I was pretty deeply invested into this version of the story and excited to see how they wrap it up.
The one draw back of this film, as with all of the films in the series, is that it is a really big time commitment, and not something you can just throw on to casually waste an afternoon. The film tells the story of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum as they continue into Mordor to destroy the ring. The film also tells of the rest of the Fellowship as through various routes they get to Gondor where they will take on the Sauron's forces. The battle scenes are epic, almost over the top. The effects are some of the best that I have ever seen in a movie, the sets are breathtakingly beautiful. The mood is dark and menacing as the strength of the dark lord grows stronger. The story gets intense as the trilogy comes to its climax. The story lines all wrap up, but even then the story is not over, as the film enters into its epilogue, which some critics say drug on too long, I personally found myself wishing that some of the left out chapters in the end would have been left in, because I wasn't ready to leave the world of Middle Earth quite yet. Just one more adventure, please.
As a whole The Lord Of The Rings, is probably one of the greatest films of all time, and the best was last as the epic adventure concludes in this thrilling final chapter. These are the films that all other fantasy films will forever be measured by. These films will forever be the fodder for D&D games and conversations in the nerd/fantasy community. The cast is absolutely perfect for all of their roles, and New Zealand was the perfect location to film this epic adventure. I really cannot praise the Return Of The King enough, it is absolutely amazing in pretty much every way. So though the films are all a huge time commitment they are a time commitment that needs to be made. The Return of the king, made me laugh, cry, and moved me. These films are not mere entertainment, they are something more, something richer and deeper.
Would I recommend this film? Yes, 100% wholeheartedly, The Return of the King is a must see and no one of any age should have not seen this film. The Return Of The King is one of the best conclusions to any film trilogy ever made. The entire trilogy are must see films, and major landmark in movie making, and broke so much ground on what could be done in effects and story telling in the medium of film. These films were instant classics, and hold up as much now as they did then. Like the beloved book series by JRR Tolkien, these films are also highly regarded and cherished among fans and lovers of film. So set aside over 9 hours of your busy life to watch this amazing film trilogy, and share them with your kids.
