The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy released in 2005 is a feature film adaptation of the widely popular sci-fi comedy series of books by Douglas Adams. The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy has appeared in multiple different forms over the years, book, radio play, television series, and now a feature film. The film stars Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent, Mose Def as Ford Prefect, Zooey Deschanel as Tricia/Trillian, Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Warwick Davis as Marvin (voiced by Alan Rickman), Bill Nighy as Slarttibartfast, John Malchovich as Humma Kavula, and many others. One thing to know, no two versions of this story are the same and some even contradict each other, but that is how Douglas Adams designed them to be. So the critics and fans who expected a direct adaptation of the book, seem to not understand Douglas Adams. this is different, yet similar, just like the radio play, and television series were different yet similar to the books. I like where the filmmakers took the story, and it is sad that Douglas Adams didn't live to see this film made. The cast was really amazing everyone perfectly cast for their roles and played them perfectly. I especially loved Sam Rockwell's portrayal of Zaphod. This is also the film where I fell in love with Zooey Deschanel. The cast is nearly perfect. The settings are also beautifully done, I especially love the use of live action puppets and people in suits to play the aliens, rather than relying on CGI effects. The film makers worked with the Jim Henson company for the effects. I think that the use of practical effects works really well in making the story feel more real, especially in how the characters interact with the creatures. The sets all look absolutely beautiful, and feel like the suit the vibe that Douglas Adams created in his books. A lot of critics did not like the film even even though it was very successful in the box office. A lot of the critics didn't find the film funny, and some even said that if you hadn't read the books the film doesn't really make any sense. I don't know about that since I had not only read the books but also watched the BBC series and listened to the radio series. So here is the thing, I really liked this film, because was familiar with the back story, and I was familiar with Douglas Adams ideas he had for a film before he died. I like the direction that this film took, and how well it was done. I will say however that some of the jokes were kinda glanced over and that may possibly have let viewers to miss the subtle humour. I know that also some people also just really don't like British humour, and they may not like this film. Would I recommend this film? Absolutely! I love this film so much and have seen it dozens of times. I would definitely say that this is a film that everyone should see at least once. This is a beautiful, funny, and well done film. I really cannot recommend this film enough.
