The Gathering is a British horror movie from 2003 starring Christina Ricci. The movie starts with two people at a music festival near a small town in England walking up a hill together, and they end up falling down a hole. The guy is impaled and dies instantly but the woman regains consciousness to find herself in what appears to be a buried ancient church. As the movie progresses we find that the church wasn't made to worship Christ, but to honour those who watched Christ's crucifixion. Meanwhile we have Christina Ricci playing this mysterious American girl who is hit by a car. She doesn't remember her past, and since she has no where to go the woman who hit her decides to take her in. She becomes friends with the family, and really close to the family's young boy. This is where things get bizarre, as there seems to be something odd going on in this small British village, and it seems like Cassie (Christina Ricci) is the only one that can see it. She discovers that there is a plot to murder some of the residents of the village including Michael the young boy that she has become close to. But there is something more going on than meets the eye, and as the movie reaches its suspenseful climax we learn that there is a reason that Cassie appeared in this village. This film seemed to totally go under the radar, and I only found out about it because I stumbled across it in a pawn shop, and it sounded interesting. The critics pretty much unanimously hated it, but as usual fuck them, what do they know. I love this movie, it is one of those lucky finds that only cost me a dollar and really impressed me. My only wish is that I could have watched it with my mom when she was still alive, because I think she would have liked it too. I thought that the story line was really interesting, and that though it didn't really move along very fast, or have a constant stream of action like many movies do, I felt that it played out really well, and kept my attention, as I continued to figure out what would happen next, and how these different plot points were going to tie together in the end. I like the concept of the story, and the idea that those who came out to watch the Crucifixion of Christ were damned to watch every tragedy that would happen on earth until the end of time. The film also looked really nice, the cinematography was well done, with beautiful sets that fit the tone of the film. The characters were well cast, I mean none of them really stood out as amazing, or memorable other than Christina Ricci, but they did play their parts sufficiently and were mostly believable. The film really came and went with very little fanfare, and honestly I'm not sure if it ever actually had a run in American theaters, as I really couldn't find a lot of information on this movie. I do know this, sadly the copy I have being a US version is a shorter film that it was originally made to be, cutting 13 minutes of the run time. The US version omits a sex scene and some dialogue, which is unfortunate, because I would like to have seen the film in it's original form, so hopefully someday I will be lucky enough to find a UK copy of it. Would I recommend this film? Yes absolutely, I really love this film, and find myself re-watching it regularly. This is definitely a film for fans of horror/thriller movies. It tells an interesting story and doesn't rely on gore and flashy action to tell the story, but relies on the story itself being compelling enough. I think the movie succeeds in that, and I would recommend it to anyone. It also helps that I absolutely love Christina Ricci, and feel that she is not only absolutely beautiful but also a really talented actress, that really improves pretty much anything that she is in. But even without her I think that this is a movie that is definitely worth the 80 some minutes that you will be sitting and watching it. So, if you ever find a copy of this movie, or get a chance to watch it, definitely do it.
