The Devil's Advocate, is a super natural horror/court room drama movie that was released in 1997 starring Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, and Charlize Theron. The movie is about a star defense lawyer from Florida, who after wining a child molestation case, where he knew his client was guilty, still defended him and won the case. While celebrating the victory, Keanu Reeves' character Kevin is approached by representative of a big-time New York City law firm, to invite him to NYC to pick the jury for an upcoming case. They win the case and Kevin is offered a position in the law firm. Kevin, continues to win every case he is in, while is wife Maryanne and himself grow more and more distant, and she also descends into madness as she is plagued by visions of demons. The film continue until it reaches it's climax that pulls the story together. The Devil's Advocate is at its heart a morality play. The movie is beautifully set in Florida, and New York City, including the apartment of Alexander Cullin being filmed in Donald Trump's apartment (which is interesting as the character is similar to Trump, as he is a terrible person, disgusting extremely wealthy real estate mogul, who is also alluded to as being a child molester, just like Trump who the character is inspired by). The movie also discusses topics of morality of defense attorneys who are defending clients who they know are guilty. This movie is greatly inspired by Dante's Inferno, Paradise Lost by Milton, and the legend of Faust. The movie is also an adaptation of Andrew Niederman's novel of the same name. I love this movie, I like the idea of the devil being the head of a hotshot New York law firm, I mean it makes sense as those who defend clients who they know are guilty are in a way doing the devil's work, by keeping rapists and murderers on the streets and away from punishment. I also feel like this is one of Keanu Reeves' strongest roles, and some of his best acting, and Al Pacino as Milton/The Devil is absolutely perfect, and of course the beautiful Charlize Theron as Maryanne is absolutely perfect, you can feel and believe her descent into madness. I guess my only real issue with this movie is the ending, I don't like how it played out, I thought that it was a bit weak, and the optimistic out-come, felt forced. I feel like they could have done it better. Would i recommend this movie? Yes i think it is a classic late 90s film, and it is a wonderful morality play and i really think everyone should see it. But it is dark, and as a horror movie don't expect scare after scare, it is more about the story and morality.
