The Brothers Grimm was a fantasy action/comedy released in 2005 starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. The movie follows two con-men Will and Jake Grimm. The brothers go from village to village ridding the people from witches and trolls and other creatures of folklore. The brothers are arrested by the French and sent to a small village where little girls are disappearing. The brothers with the help of a French soldier and a huntswoman enter into an enchanted forest and find themselves in a real fairy tale. This movie is fun, it has some good comedic effect thrown in. There are some big effects and action, and the movie looks really nice and fantastic. Dark in the right places, and also gritty in the right places. The costumes and set designs are also beautiful, and I feel are a big part of the movie. The movie really is beautiful to look at. The movie definitely has a fairy tale quality to it. This is a movie that doesn't seem to take itself seriously, and is a lot of fun to watch. The effects in the movie I feel overdo the CGI, and would have looked better with more practical effects. This isn't a bad movie by any means, but it is also not a great movie either, what it does seem to be is a typical movie of this genre that was made in the mid 2000's. It kind of seems a lot of these fantasy action movies are really similar and kind of blur together, I am not necessarily saying that this is a bad thing, and I do enjoy some of these movies, but they will never really stand out, and be great movies. The actors are all...well ok, no one is really great, but they are all perfectly adequate for their role. The effects look like a lot of money were spent, and they for the most part look pretty smooth and believable, but they are not really amazing or memorable, and were pretty much just similar to other movies of the genre. The film has pretty much no relation to the actual Brother's Grimm other than being about how these brothers collect these fairy tales. The movie does look beautiful, that much is true, but watching the movie it feels like the story doesn't actually seem to go anywhere. It is kind of fun how they incorporate so many of the classic fairy tales into the movie, and it is kind of fun seeing how the stories will be worked into the movie. The movie though is kind of a mess honestly, and I feel like it could have been done better, however maybe it needed to be the mess that it is, because for all of its flaws, I am glad it exists, and I do enjoy this movie. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely, especially if you are gonna have some friends over and have some drinks and junk food and put on this movie along with some of the similar movies in its genre like Red Riding Hood and Van Helsing for example, and just have a fun night of fantasy action movies. Definitely fun, and enjoyable, but not a deep meaningful, or serious movie, definitely not a high brow movie, and it does deserve the rough treatment that it received from the critics, but that doesn't necessarily make it a terrible movie. There are a lot of fun movies that were critically hated, don't let movie critiques tell you what you should like, like whatever you enjoy. Though it isn't a great movie, I really do enjoy this movie, and I hope you go into it with no expectations and just let yourself have fun.
