The Boogie Man Will Get You is a slapstick horror/comedy from 1942, starring Boris Karloff and Peter Lorrie. This was the last movie that Karloff did under contract for Columbia Pictures. Karloff stars as the bumbling mad scientist who is trying to create a race of super humans in the basement of a classic American Inn, which is sold to a young woman looking to get a new start. Peter Lorrie stars as the Dr (who does pretty much everything in this town). The movie is a comedy horror in the vein of the classic Abbot and Costello meet the monsters movies. And as the bodies pile up so do the laughs. This movie is actually surprisingly amazing. The copy that I have was beautifully restored, and looks clean and clear, with a perfect sound track, I mention this, because sometimes in these older movies there are issues with sound and picture. The movie is perfectly cast, Karloff excels as the bumbling mad scientist, his character is quite lovable and endearing. Peter Lorrie as the Doctor is perfectly cast, and together with Karloff make a wonderful comedy duo. I didn't expect a lot when I first watched this movie, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised by how truly great this movie really is. It is not a serious movie, and never for a minute tries to be, it is just good fun. This movie looks like it had a bit of a higher budget thrown into it compared to some of Karloff's later movies like The Ape, and the story is fun and well told, with a lot of great twists and turns, and surprises. As far as flaws go, it is a bit cheesy at times, and sometimes the story twists and turns a little excessively throwing in more wacky characters than what is probably necessary. But it works for this movie, it walks a fine line of being to silly and being just right, and it succeeds at being funny and not stupid. I mean I really don't have much negative to say about this movie, as a big fan of both Karloff and Lorrie, I feel that they teamed up perfectly is this silly movie. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely! I know that black and white movies are not for everyone, but this one is seriously just so much fun, I think that everyone should give it a try. It is sad that this movie is never mentioned, and it seems like it has faded into obscurity, which is really a shame, because it is actually a fantastic movie, with great characters, great dialogue, and great acting. I like that Karloff is funny, without seeming to try to act funny, it is just his demeanor that makes his character convincing. So if you are ever in the mood for a slap-stick comedy with horror movie vibes then put this amazing movie on.
