Ghostbusters 2 released in 1989 is a direct sequel to the original comedic horror classic. This film stars the entire original man cast, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson reprise their roles as the Ghostbusters, and in their original supporting roles we have Annie Potts, Sygourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis. The original film however was meant to be conclusive, and not have a need for a sequel, and the original writers had no intention of making one. But with the success of the popular animated series The Real Ghostbusters, Columbia Pictures pushed for a sequel. Most of the critics harshly criticized this film, saying that it is uninspired, lazy, and not funny. I can understand where they are coming from, when compared to the original film, however I have my own views on this film. I first saw this in the theater when I was 8 years old, and I loved it. To this day the story is still fun, and the effects still hold up well, and still look really decent. Sure some parts the effects are a little hokey, but over all they really look damn good, and have mostly aged well. I also actually enjoyed the writing quite a lot as well, I felt that the story was interesting, and brought in new elements that kept true to the original Ghostbusters film. It was also nice seeing Winston play a bit larger of a role as one of the Ghostbusters as well, and not just feel like an after thought, and also Rick Moranis' and Annie Potts' characters also played larger roles in the story as well, which I think was inspired by how all of their characters became bigger parts in the animated series. Honestly I really do love this movie, and feel it stands up very well even next to the original, to me there are a lot of very memorable scenes that really do make this movie a classic. It is actually interesting that critically this movie is so heavily trashed when it is fondly remembered by so many fans. This was deemed by most of the actors and the writers to be the final Ghostbusters movie, and still to this date Bill Murray is against a Ghostbusters 3, there was a reboot made, that was hated by most critics, though I myself actually liked it and found merit in the way that it was done, but that will not be the next movie I review, because I don't own it, and not sure if I will. I don't think that it is necessary to reboot, or even continue the Ghostbusters series, as if it was done it would have only lessened the genius of the original two films, as many thing Ghostbusters 2 is guilty of. Would I recommend this film? Yes, absolutely, as with its predecessor, Ghostbusters 2 should be on every persons to watch list, and both of these films wold be fun to share with younger kids who haven't seen them before. They are both great movies and have honestly aged well and graciously, as they still look as good, are as funny, and are as relevant now as they were in the 80s. So pop some popcorn and grab some friends and put on Ghostbusters one and two and be ready for a fun night!
