Fido, released in 2006 is a zom-com that takes place in a fictional 1950s world. Of all of the zombie movies that came out during the 2000's zombie craze, Fido is a refreshingly original movie. It takes place in a bright coloured 1950's setting, in a town not that different than one would imagine Leave It To Beaver existing in, but with zombies. The premise of the movie is that a space radiation cloud engulfed the earth causing the dead to rise up and attack the living, which started the zombie wars. The zombie wars ended with ZomCon creating a collar that domesticates zombies, so that they can become servants and productive members of society. So though the world seems to be a nice idealistic 1950's society, just out side the city's fences lies a wild zone of untamed zombies. So this movie is about the Robinson family, the father of the family hates zombies because his dad had turned into one and tried to bite him, the wife on the other hand really wants a zombie because they are the only family on the street without one, and then you have odd, shy outcast Timmy who is the son of the family, he is the main character. Well the mom gets a zombie for the family, and throughout the film Timmy and the zombie, Fido, becomes friends, and the mother develops feelings for Fido as well. Unfortunately Fido has a malfunctioning collar, which causes him to kill old lady Mrs Henderson, which starts a Zombie outbreak. Their neighbor however is the head of security at ZomCon and is on them. Will Timmy and his mom be able to save Fido before it's too late? So I kind of glazed over the plot there, because I really don't want to give anything away. I want to talk more about my thoughts about this film. The movie received mostly positive reviews. The sets and cinematography is absolutely beautiful. The cast is all perfect in their rolls, and completely believable. Most of the actors in the film are lesser known actors aside from Carrie-Ann Moss (who is known for her Roll as Trinity in the Matrix), who plays Timmy's mother. All of the actors were great though, and perfectly cast. The special effects are minimal, but they are well done and look really good, there is the right amount of blood and gore to make any horror movie fan happy, but the film is primarily a comedy. Honestly the movie has some tender emotional parts to it, it really is a well balanced movie, that is surprisingly really good. When I first saw Fido, I was expecting just another low budget zombie movie, but I was so surprised to find it was actually a great smart comedy with horror and dramatic parts. Really a very underrated movie. Part of why this might have flown under so many people's radars is due to the fact that it is a Canadian movie and not an American movie. I do think that this is really a movie that everyone should give a chance. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, absolutely, whether you like horror, comedy, or drama, this is definitely a movie worth checking out. Just a fun movie about a boy and his zombie!
