Evil Dead 2 (Dead By Dawn) was released in 1987, and is not so much an actual sequel to Evil Dead, but more of an different version of Evil Dead. Honestly this is a weird series of movies as, most movies the sequels build upon the first one, but in the Evil Dead quadrilogy three of the movies are different variations on the same movie, and only the third movie is a direct sequel of the second movie. This is the second of the Evil Dead franchise, and it is also directed by Sam Rami and stars Bruce Campbell.
So in this classic b-horror movie we have Ash and his girlfriend driving to a remote cabin in the forested mountains of North Carolina. When they get to the cabin they find a tape recorder which they play, and which ends up summoning evil spirits. Ash ends up having to slaughter his girlfriend who becomes possessed by a demon. Meanwhile Annie the daughter of the scientist who the cabin belongs to arrives at the cabin with her boyfriend and two rednecks who guide them to through the forest to the cabin. She has the missing pages of the Necronomicon (Book of the Dead). Well shit gets crazy, many gallons of blood, tons and tons of gore, amazing stop motion special effects, lead this movie towards its exciting climax. There was definitely more money put into this movie, including some amazing stop motion special effects, and tons of blood and gore. The special effects are more definitely more cartoony, but that is intentional, though this is definitely a gory horror movie, it is also an intentional comedy as well. The story to this movie is a lot more developed with a bit more meat to it. This movie looks great, for what it is, which is a b-horror movie, but it honestly really is a great movie. So many comedic horror movies have been done, but few have been as great as the Evil Dead movies, they are just so well done, so well cast, everyone is perfect for their roles. These movies also revolutionized horror movies and experimented with a lot of techniques that would later be adopted into other movies. Some of the camera techniques were very unique. Like the previous movie, there is a lot of gore, which creates an excellent gross out effect, but the way that the movie is filmed also helps to create more authentic horror elements as well. Again like the previous movie, the minimalism of set and characters helps to create the isolated feeling of the film. There is also a lot of slapstick comedy as well, which Bruce Campbell is amazing at. Honestly if Jim Carey were in a gory b-horror movie he would be Bruce Campbell, a lot of their over acting is pretty similar. Evil Dead 2 actually surpasses the original Evil Dead movie as far as how great it is. Another great thing about this movie, is that all of the effects are practical effects, and they look great. The critics even responded with mostly positive reviews of this film. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, absolutely, this is definitely a must see b-horror movie, though it isn't for everyone. I like how in the movie High Fidelity there is a discussion about how Evil Dead 2 is the greatest movie of all time. Definitely a great film, and definitely worth watching. This film also seemed like it was fun to work on. Definitely find yourself a copy of this one and give it a watch.
