Edward Scissorhands is a dark romantic fantasy that was released in 1990. This movie also marks the first of many Tim Burton films that would star Johnny Depp. Burton continued to work with Danny Elfman (Oingo Boingo) on the music, and also cast Winona Ryder who previously starred in his movie Beetlejuice.
Edward Scissorhands is a sort of retelling of the Frankenstein story, with Johnny Depp playing Edward, a boy with scissors for hands. Edward was created by the Inventor played by the legendary horror icon Vincent Price. Edward is found living alone in a derelict Gothic mansion on a hill, he is found by a suburban woman who meets him while selling Avon. He is then brought into her family in a nameless suburban town. He ends up falling for the teenage daughter of the family that takes him in (played by Winona Ryder), and they end up having feelings for each other. At it's heart this is a story about being outcast, and different and never really fitting into society. The story is inspired by Burton's own loneliness and feeling of being an outsider a kid, and he drew a picture that represented that loneliness, that was an image of a tall skinny darkly dressed figure with scissors for hands. As the movie progresses, we see Edward failing to fit in, and like the Frankenstein monster vilified and hunted and hated and feared.
Edward Scissorhands draws its inspiration from may sources, including Expressionist films like Cabinet of Dr Caligari, as well as classic Universal Monster Movies. The movie's characters are all perfectly cast, and give amazing performances. The expressionist art style of Tim Burton is beautiful and creates this element of magic and fantasy, even in the most mundane of settings like suburban America. The movie just looks absolutely beautiful. With the amazing look and acting of the movie as well as the theme of the story, this is a timeless movie, that will be watched for generations to come. I really can't think of much to say about this movie other than it is a nearly perfect film.
Would I recommend this movie? Yes, I feel like this is a must see movie, and everyone should watch this film.
