Dreamcatcher was released in 2003 and is based on Stephen King's novel of the same name. This movie's screenplay was written in part by William Goldman (Princess Bride), and starred an all star cast including Jason Lee, Morgan Freeman, Tom Sizemore, Donnie Wahlberg, and many others. Dreamcatcher is a about a tight group of friends, Beaver, Jonesy, Pete, and Henry, and their connection to their strange friend Duddits. King wrote this book as an homage to 50s and 60s era monster movies, and I feel like he captured that feeling perfectly, and I feel that the movie did as well. This movie is not meant to be taken as a serious horror movie, but a fun alien invasion movie, and as a fan of the movies and comics that King was paying homage to, I feel that this is a great and effective movie. It is over the top, it is silly, it has a b-movie feel to it even though it had a huge budget. Unfortunately this movie flopped in the theaters barely making back what was spent on it, and most critics gave it abysmal reviews, and honestly, fuck them, in my opinion they just didn't get it. I love this movie, and I loved the book that it was based on, it is an amazing b-horror/sci-fi movie, and it looks absolutely beautiful, as well as having a smooth flow, and great plot. The characters are all perfectly cast, I especially love Jason Lee as Beaver, he had all of the best one-liners and was a great comedic character that is absolutely lovable. Also getting to hear Morgan Freeman say "shit weasels" is always a pleasure. Yes, this movie has an overabundance of toilet humour, and inside jokes between the friends, but honestly that gives it this charm that totally works for me. I also love the flashback scenes that add to the character development and help the viewer to really fall for Duddits and and appreciate the bond that the five of them have together, I wish that a movie could be long enough to provide space for more of the flashbacks from the book that was cut out. Honestly as much as I am not a fan of CGI effects, they actually work really well in this movie, to give it that cheesy sci-fi look. Yes, this is a cheesy, sci-fi horror movie, and if you go into it expecting that, you will not be let down. I know I didn't talk about the plot in this review, because even if I tried I wouldn't do it justice, it really is a movie that needs to be seen. I absolutely love this movie, and I honestly feel all of the negative critiques of this movie were because the critic just didn't get it, that they expected something that it wasn't. The thing with King is you can't just assume what he is going to do with a story, because you might get a Shawshank Redemption, or you might get It, or you might get something less serious like Dreamcatcher. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, whole heartedly I would recommend this movie, but I want you to go into it, not expecting a serious movie, but expect instead a b-horror/sci-fi movie in the vein of the 50's and 60's monster and space invasion movies and expect a lot of toilet humour, and you won't be let down. So even though the critics called this film a "fuckarow", I would say it's more of a "fuckaree" (and if you don't get that then I'm not sure if this is the film for you). Every actor in this movie delivers a top notch performance.
