Deathgasm is a heavy metal horror comedy from New Zealand from 2015. This movie is about an outcast metalhead named Brodie who is forced to live with his conservative Christian aunt and uncle, and his asshole jock cousin. He is an outcast at school whose only friends are Dion and Giles who are nerds that play role-playing games. One day at the local record shop Brodie meets fellow metalhead Zakk. Zakk and Brodie start a metal band called Deathgasm with Dion and Giles. Meanwhile Brodie meets the beautiful Medina, who was dating his cousin. But she breaks up with him because of how he and his friends bully Brodie and his friends. She meets up with Brodie outside of a shop where the boys are loading up the car with their gear after shooting a music video, and Brodie is in full corpse paint. She asks him out for an ice cream, which leads to a cute scene of them having an ice cream date in a park. Brodie totally fails to kiss her at the end of their date because of his shyness, even though she is very clearly coming on to him. They part with him letting her borrow some metal cds. She listens to the CDs and starts ends up getting really into the music. Zakk then takes Brodie to an abandoned house where they break into it and find metal legend Rikki Daggers, who they try to steal a record from, who ends up giving them the record because these well dressed men break into the house to also steal the record, these folks end up being in some mysterious cult, and the record contains ancient sheet music that summons a demon. Well Deathgasm plays the music (the Black Hymn) and release hell on earth, and blood drenched mayhem ensues! The sexy Medina becomes a bad ass demon slayer drenched in blood, Brodie finds out that he needs to play the Black Hymn backwards and the movie ends up being one of my favourite movies of all-time. This movie does pretty much everything right! The scenes are all beautifully done, and fit the mood and theme of the movie absolutely perfect. I love the metal soundtrack, especially the theme song performed by Bullet Belt. The actors are all absolutely perfectly cast, they all are such real characters, like I literally know people like everyone in this movie. The movie has the perfect amount of horror and comedy, with the right amount of drama sprinkled in for flavour. Oh, and is there anything in this wold more beautiful and badass than Medina (Kimberly Crossman) covered in blood, wielding an axe and chopping up demons? I love the purposeful and comedic use of gore, using the grossout approach to horror as a comedic effect. Like I love when Brodie is in a battle with his demon aunt and he is getting drenched in her blood, that he takes a second to spit her blood out of his mouth before continuing on with the battle, moments like that are so good. This is a movie that never intends to take itself seriously, but at the same time is seriously one of the greatest modern horror movies. This is a movie of friends, of losers who don't fit in, who accidently summon a demon and turn their shitty little town into demons, who then through friendship, teamwork and sacrifice save the day. There is nothing I don't absolutely love about this movie. This is what I want in a b-horror movie, it has all of these potentially cheesy aspects but never becomes a cringy cheesy movie, but actually comes together perfectly and just works so well. This movie also follows the tradition of great b-horror movies from New Zealand which were set by the likes of Peter Jackson who started as a B-horror movie director from there. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, without a doubt, everyone needs to see this film, I would definitely put it among my top favourite movies. This movie is for all of us out-cast losers playing D&D and listening to metal music, this is our movie! This movie also follows the tradition of great b-horror movies from New Zealand which were set by the likes of Peter Jackson who started as a B-horror movie director from there.
