Corpse Bride is a Tim Burton movie that was released in 2005, starring Johnny Depp as Victor, Emily Watson as Victoria, and Helena Bonham Carter as Emily (the corpse bride). The movie started off with Victor and Victoria being from two prominent families, who are marrying off their kids to save their families from being destitute. Victor is struggling to say his lines during the wedding rehearsal and goes to a cemetery to practice his lines, and ends up unwittingly marrying Emily, a dead woman. He ends up going with her into the land of the dead. Victor keeps trying to get back to Victoria, refusing to be Emily's husband. Though as the story progresses he develops feelings for Emily, which complicates things for the story. This is not a traditional love story, and it is a bit complicated. The movie leads up to an exciting climax as Victor and Emily go into the land of the living to have their wedding, but will things go as planned? This movie looks beautiful the set designs and character designs look beautiful, and the stop motion animation is very smooth and realistic. The character design is very impressive, being very detailed, yet not overly detailed. There is a wonderful visual contrast of the land of living and the land of the dead, where the land of the living is cold and stark, and the land of the dead is lively and vibrant. The land of the living everyone seems cold and miserable, whereas the inhabitants of the land of the dead are upbeat the lively. The characters were perfectly cast, and play their rolls absolutely perfectly. The movie does struggling with pacing, and does drag in parts, and some of the scenes are a little too drawn out. The only characters who really develop at all are Victor and Emily, which would lead the viewer to thinking that they will end up together at the end, where as Victoria really doesn't grow or develop at all. The living characters are kind of dull and uninteresting and I feel that whenever they are on screen the viewer is hoping that they can get back to the land of the dead where the characters have more personality and life to them. Also some of the character designs are a little ridiculous for example Victoria's mother looks like she has a giant testicle sack on her head because of the way her hair is designed, but that is Tim Burton for you, to have things being over the top and borderline absurd. Would I recommend this movie, absolutely it is a great story, well made, beautiful to look at, but not sure if it's something I could watch repeatedly, but definitely one I will revisit ocassionally. It has some beautiful sets, and amazing music, by the amazing Danny Elfman. The movie is definitely visually and artistically beautiful, and it is fascinating watching the special features about how it was made. I also like how this movie doesn't portray death as this bad thing, but it is actually upbeat and beautiful. This is not your normal love story, but definitely one that everyone should see. Also recommended for fans of Tim Burton's and of dark romantic beauty. Another nice thing about this movie is that it can be enjoyed by viewers of any age, as people from different ages would get different things from the story. Definitely a great movie.
