Constantine was released in 2005 and starred Keanu Reeves. Constantine is based loosely off of the Hellblazer comics by DC Comics. The character of John Constantine first appeared in the Swamp Thing comics also by DC. I haven't read the comics, however from what I understand this movie is more based on the concept of the comics and not truly a film adaptation of the actual comics. I usually am not a fan of comic book based movies, however there are a few that I do actually like a lot. Constantine kind of falls in the middle as far as my feelings on it, it isn't a great movie, but it also isn't a terrible movie by any means. I guess to sum up the movie without going too greatly into the plot, it is about John Constantine who pretty much hunts demons, and it is also a movie about the battle between Heaven and Hell with the earth caught in the middle, and it also deals with the common movie concept of the angels and demons being jealous of humans for their gift of free will (which we've seen in movies from Dogma to City of Angels). Honestly there really isn't anything terribly original about this film, but the story-line is interesting and fun to watch. I would say the biggest thing about this movie that I didn't like is Keanu Reeves, he really is one dimensional, and flat and boring, there is really no difference between the way he plays Constantine than the way that he plays Neo in The Matrix. Some of the visuals in the movie are really good looking though, really the movie is a good looking movie. All of the actors are just okay, there is nothing really notably great about any of them, honestly the young Shia LaBeouf may have been the best actor in the movie. The story is decent, but nothing really new, I feel like there are other religious based movies like Stigmata for example who do the religion thing better, and other supernatural hunter type movies like Van Helsing that do that better, leaving this movie as kind of an okay version of themes that others have done better. I am again not by any means saying this is a bad movie, it just isn't great. It is fun to watch, there is some great action, some nice looking special effects, a decent story, great looking sets, and some cool themes. Would I recommend this movie? I suppose, but there are other movies I think I would recommend first. It is a fun movie, and if you are a fan of supernatural comic style movies, then this might just be the movie for you. Pop up some popcorn and have some drinks with friends and enjoy this dark action movie. Honestly though, this movie is pretty forgettable, and I feel like you could probably spend your time on a better movie. Then again I have spent a lot of time on bad movies, and this one was worth the time I put into it, but not one I will be returning to and watching again in the too near future.
