City of Angels was released 1998, and as I just found out while researching for this review, it is a loose remake of a 1987 German movie called Wings of Desire. Meg Ryan stars as a nurse named Maggie who loses a patient on the operating table. Nicolas Cage is an angel named Seth, who was present in the O.R. to usher the patient to the afterlife. While she is struggling to bring the patient back to life, Seth thinks that she looks him in the eye, and he starts to fall in love with her. He lets her see him, and they start spending time together. Meanwhile she has another patient Nathan Messenger, who can sense that Seth is in the room, and from Nathan, Seth learns that Angels are given free will, an can choose to "fall" (which in this case is meant literally, as in to jump off a building) and become human, Nathan did it for his wife 30 years prior. So Seth and Maggie have an interesting relationship building period, and he decides to "fall" for her, which leads up to one of the saddest most romantic endings of a movie ever. This movie is very well done, it looks beautiful, like a work of art. The characters are all perfectly cast, and this just might be Nicholas Cage's best roll. The music is also absolutely phenomenal in this movie, the soundtrack album is as great as the movie itself. Their is amazing character development, that makes the characters really endearing to the viewer, and you really care about the characters, and feel their emotions and their feelings. I would say that this is one of my favourite love stories that I have ever seen, to love someone enough to give up an eternity to be with the person that you love, is beautiful. This movie always makes me cry so hard, every time that I see, it it is so beautifully done. I first saw this movie back in 1998 soon after it came out, my highschool girlfriend introduced me to it, and I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it, and I can still feel the emotions I had then whenever I see this movie. As far as flaws, other than the movie being a bit overly romantic, it is just beautiful and there is nothing I can really say critically against it, it is one of my favourite movies. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely, with all of my heart I would recommend this movie, to anyone who is in the mood for a romantically tragic movie. I absolutely love this movie, and could not recommend it enough.
