In 1985 Stephen King wrote an anthology film called Cat's Eye. The movie is comprised of 3 short stories, two of which appear in Night Shift (Quitters Inc, and The Ledge) and a third (General) was written exclusively for the movie. The movie stars a young Drew Barrymore, and James Wood among others. The three movies are linked together by a cat, and by Drew Barrymore as "Our Girl". Drew and the cat are actually in all three of the stories, and are what link them together. There are also some other easter eggs to be found such as links to Cujo, Christine, Pet Sematary, and the Dead Zone to list a few. The first story, Quitter's Inc, stars James Woods and is about a company that has a VERY radical way to help people quit smoking. The story gets really intense as the main character struggles to quit his addiction to cigarettes. The second story, The Ledge is about a rich man with a gambling addiction, and a washed up tennis pro who has stolen his wife. Well the rich man kidnaps the tennis pro and says he can have his wife and a bunch of money if he accepts the bet that he can't walk around the ledge of the sky scrapper that he lives at the top of. If he doesn't take the wager, there is heroin stashed in his car and the cops will be called and he will go to prison. So out on the ledge he goes. This story gives me a shit ton of anxiety as I nervously watch him make his way around the ledge, and leads up to an intense climax. And the third story "General" is by far my favourite. This is a story where the cat and Drew Berrymore are the main two characters rather than the smaller roles they played in the previous stories. The cat "General" gets "adopted" by Drew Barrymore's character, though her bitch of a mom won't allow him to stay in the house, because of her fear that cats are all dangerous predators, and that they will steal children's breath while they sleep. However, Drew and General know something that her mom doesn't, and that is that there is a monster that has moved into her wall, who is actually trying to steal her breath will she sleeps, and General is trying to save her from this monster. I love the practical effects in this movie, and the fact that at times they are over the top cheesy just makes me love them even more. I feel that this is one of my favourite horror anthology movies up there with Stephen King and George Romero's Creep Show (which we will talk about in more detail later). The actors all seemed perfectly cast for their roles and played them so well. I mean honestly there isn't really anything that I don't like about this movie, it has some great story telling, and it looks great (though like I said a bit cheesy in parts, but that adds to what I love about it). Really it is a very solid movie with few actual flaws to it. And Drew Barrymore is amazing, perfectly cast in all three of her roles. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, absolutely, this is one of the best, if not the best Stephen King horror anthology, and should be viewed by everyone who loves King, horror movies, fantasy movies, or just a well constructed movie. Definitely worth the watch, and worth revisiting often.
