In 1976 Stephen King's first novel Carrie was given a film adaption, starring Sissy Spacek and it was also John Travolta's first movie. Carrie is about this girl named Carrie White who is an outcast at school that no one likes, and she has a hardcore Christian zealot for a mother, who believes that everything is a sin. When Carrie gets her period in the shower after gym class, he class mates taunt her and throw tampons and pads at her yelling "plug it up". Carrie not knowing what is happening to her because her extremist Christian mother not only never educated her about this, but also when she tells her mom, her mom says it is because she is a sinner and a whore that she got her period. Well Carrie and the viewers also find out around this point that Carrie has telekinetic powers. So the girls get punished for bullying Carrie, and one gets denied privileges to go to the prom, so she developed this evil plan to get back at Carrie (who she views is the reason she can't go to prom, rather than her own shitty behavior). Meanwhile another of the girls, feels bad for her part in the bullying of Carrie, so she asks her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom. Carrie obviously doesn't trust this, and justifiably thinks that it is just a set up to make fun of her. The story ends in an explosive climax, which everyone knows at this point, but i am still not going to talk about it out of respect for the one or two people out there who have yet to see this movie. So this book almost didn't get published, as Stephen King threw it in the trash, but his wife Tabitha found it and read it, and urged him to try to get it published. This act by his wife, is probably what gave us Stephen King's amazing body of work, as this is not only his first novel, but was also a huge success and best seller. It seemed only right that two years later it would be made into a successful movie, staring an amazing cast of young actors. This movie does a reasonably good job at following the book, and is a pretty good adaptation. I love how the story is an over exaggeration of school bullying, and about the victim getting their revenge. Carrie, is a very straight forward story, and is beautifully brought to life in this movie. There really isn't much negative to say about it, I mean sure it looks a bit dated, but the story is timeless, because as long as there are bullied outcasts in school who dream of getting revenge on those who torture them, this movie will be relevant. The movie looks amazing, and the few special effects, look seamless and smooth, and are believable. The characters are all perfectly cast and play their roles perfectly, especially Carrie and her deranged mother. This is cited as one of the greatest horror movies of all-time, and I would absolutely agree with this. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely, everyone needs to see this horror classic, that launched not only the career of Stephen King as an author, but also the young John Travolta who would go on to be a huge A-list Hollywood actor. This movie is such an important part of our pop-culture, and needs to be experienced. I as a victim of bullying in school, loved seeing a fellow victim get her revenge on the fuckers who tortured her, and the ones who did nothing to stop them. Amazing movie, nearly perfect.
