My ex-roommate introduced me to interesting movie, she said I needed to see it. Well she was right, I absolutely needed to see this movie. Bug is a psychological horror movie, about at waitress Agnes who lives alone in a run-down hotel in rural Oklahoma. Her friend introduces her Peter a drifter, and he ends up staying with Agnes. They quickly begin a relationship, and the movie begins to get quite insane very quickly. Agnes is dealing with her abusive ex who just got out of prison, who is trying to get into her life, and also she can't get over her child who disappeared. After Agnes and Peter sleep together, he finds a bug in their bed, and very quickly he discovers that their room is infested with bugs. He believes that the bugs are due to a government experiment, and Agnes starts to believe that the bugs are real, and begins to believe Peter's conspiracy theories about the government and their testing. The movie descends into madness very quickly, as the shared paranoia and hallucinations intensify. Agnes is a lonely, sad damaged woman, and Peter is also a very damaged person, and her broken state I think helps her to get drawn into his paranoia. This movie works really well, and to put it mildly this movie is a mind-fuck. The descent into madness is very realistic, and very convincing, as a viewer you can feel the claustrophobic madness that the characters are going through. It is interesting because in a way this story is a love story, showing how easily a broken person can fall for someone, and how they can be lead into insanity by their love for that person. The story is interesting, and it makes the viewer question what is reality, where is this insane story going? I also think that this movie being filmed on 16mm film also gives the movie a certain look that is important to making the story a raw and real as it is. The set designs though minimal work absolutely perfectly for this film. The sets portray poverty and desperation, the rundown hotel, the rundown hotel room where most of the movie takes place, it all helps to build the dark and gritty atmosphere of the story. The movie takes place mostly in one small space, which I think adds to the claustrophobic feel, and the descent into madness. The actors were all perfectly cast for their roles, and played real convincing characters. There really aren't a lot of flaws to this movie, other than that it was supposed to take place in Oklahoma, but the external shots were done in CA, with the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the background, and there are no mountains in Oklahoma, so there is some inconsistency there. Other than that this movie works, it looks good, and it is really an amazing movie. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, absolutely. This movie is an amazing psychological horror movies, it delves into the mind of a person with paranoia and hallucinations, and it shows how it can spread into others who are also broken and looking for something to hold grasp onto. This is an amazing movie, with a great cast, it is filmed in a way that captures the feeling of the movie perfectly. Definitely not a fun movie, definitely a difficult movie psychologically, but definitely a movie that needs to be watched. This movie will definitely challenge your hold on reality.
