An American Haunting was released in 2005, directed by Courtney Solomon, who also directed the Dungeons and Dragons movie. An American Haunting is based on legend of the Bell Witch. Going into this movie I wasn't honestly sure what to expect, I knew that it was based on the Bell Witch legend and that it had received horrible reviews, and has a terrible rating by the critics. I really did not expect the twist at the end of the movie, that explained the haunting. I am not going to say that this was a great movie, however I did actually really enjoy it, I really liked that twist, it was uncomfortable, and I like how that it linked in to the modern day mother and daughter from the beginning of the movie, and explains why she is experiencing similar events in her life. I actually thought the ending of this movie was pretty powerful and well done. I will warn viewers that this movie, does deal with the topic of child abuse and the sexual abuse of a young woman, and that this could be a hard movie to watch for some viewers, so be warned and watch with caution. I went into this movie with no expectations of what I was going to see, and honestly I actually quite enjoyed it. I wouldn't describe this movie as fun, as it can in subject matter be a little unnerving, but it is pretty well done. Some of the special effects are lackluster and hokey, but if you don't let that ruin your enjoyment, there is a good story to be watched, and some great acting. I feel that this movie was really well cast, and there is some great character development going on. I feel that the period setting of the movie is also quite well done. I also have to say that Rachel Hurd-Wood did a fantastic job playing the role of Betsy Bell. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, but I don't know if everyone would enjoy it as much as I did, as it does have its flaws, but if you can look past those you will find a decent movie that deals with some heavy subject matter. Definitely worth the watch, just don't have any expectations for it to be scary, because it is more of a suspense than a horror movie, though there are a few jump-scares through out, the movie is more about the story than the horror, and honestly I did appreciate it.
