I debated whether or not I would write reviews of movies that I don't actually have in my collection, but I think I will also do them for movies I see in the theater. Tonight I saw Alita: Battle Angel, and I must say, wow, definitely worth watching. I am a fan of anime and manga, and this movie is based off of a 90's manga series called Gunnm, or also known as Battle Angel Alita, I sadly have not read the original manga, but I am not planning on trying to find it. So this is a futuristic steam-punk sci-fi action movie. It is about a future world where people were living in cities in the sky, and then there was a great war, where all of the sky cities fell to the earth, except one. This takes place 300 years after that war. A dr (who builds and repairs cybernetic bodies and parts) finds the head of a young female cyborg in the dump, and brings her home and gives her a body and reactivates her, naming her after his deceased daughter. He becomes basically a father to her, and she a rebellious teenager. Alita has no memory of her past. The movie is about her trying to find her memories, it is also a love story, with a beautiful dramatic romance going on between a human and a cyborg. This movie has the perfect balance of action, and drama, as well as a great story line. This movie isn't for everyone, as the critics have kind of proven, but if you like Anime, if you like action sci-fi with a steampunk feel, then this is your movie. The CG effects and characters blend seamlessly with the human actors, I have actually never seen CG effects work this well before. I feel like the techniques that James Cameron developed on Avatar, I feel he perfected here. This is one of the best looking CG movies that I have ever seen, it is absolutely beautiful. The one thing that I found that I didn't like was the sports theme with the "Motorball" sequences, I am sure that some people will love that and feel its exciting, but to me it just seemed cheesy...then again I HATE sports, and find them dull (I will say though this sure as hell beat the stupid Pod Racing crap in Star Wars Episode 1). This is probably the best (mostly)live action adaptation of a manga or anime that I have seen so far. I loved it so much. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, go see it right now, go to the theater, buy a bucket of popcorn, and giant soda, and some candy, and sit back and center in the theater and watching this amazing movie!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait for the sequels to come out, to find out what Alita gets up to next, and to see the mysterious city in the sky. Also this is the super hero that teenage girls need, I am liking the trend in movies of the strong female leads, which was something I also loved about Mortal Engines, which I saw on Christmas. Please, get to the theater and watch this movie, then come back and share your feelings with me.
