Aliens is the second movie in the Alien franchise, and it lives up to its predecessor exceedingly well. So Ripley was rescued from drifting in space 50 some years after the events in the original movie. The corporation does not believe her story, and have in the passing years even colonized the planet in which they found the alien ship in the original movie. Well, Ripley loses her pilot license and basically becomes a manual laborer. Well, the colonists on the planet discover the ship, and long story short, they should have headed Ripley's warning. Ripley ends up being recruited to be the adviser for the military team that is sent to rescue the colonists. So the movie is basically about that rescue mission, and we kinda know what to expect from the last movie. This movie centers around Ripley, a team of marines, an android, a company rep, and this amazing little girl named Newt who is the survivor from the colony. Again, this movie has not only one amazing female lead, but multiple strong female characters including Newt and a very hard-ass female marine, so it is refreshing that it keeps with the strong female characters, which is really nice to see in movies. The characters are really well cast, and there is a lot more character growth and development, which helps to make the characters more relatable and meaningful to the viewer. There is the issue of characters falling into stereotypes again, as there was in the last one, this time the big stereotype is the arrogant, asshole, know it all marines, who are sexist, and almost intolerable. Bill Paxton's character, is the comic relief of the movie, and many of the movie's memorable lines are his one-liners, but at the same time, he is fucking obnoxious and hard to tolerate at times. The thing is though, that these characters may be unlikable, but they are well played, and the actors really do deliver on the arrogant marine stereotype. The special effects again are mostly practical, with the aliens being played by people in suits and animatronics, and there models being used for sets. They again utilized the great HR Giger artwork that made the first movie so amazing. The sets were amazingly well done, and they just looked fantastic. There is again that awesome dark atmosphere to the movie, and it sets this foreboding tone, which is really effective. Again like the first movie, there is this sense of doom, and hopelessness, like there is no way possible that these characters can make it out alive, and it doesn't let up, the action has a slow build to it, but it keeps building and like a snowball rolling down a hill, gaining momentum, and getting more and more intense until it reaches it's climax, with the viewer on the edge of their seat.
I would say that Aliens is more of a sci-fi movie with horror elements where as Alien was a horror movie with sci-fi elements, as this edition to the series definitely plays more on the science fiction tropes than the horror tropes that the first movie relied upon. Again very well done movie, with a more complex story, and well played characters. I kinda feel in some ways young Newt kinda steals the show, as she is to me such an amazing character, and like I said Bill Paxton playing Hudson keeps things fun, and Sigourney Weaver back as Ripley kicking ass again, and also Bishop (the android) develops as a complex character. Very well cast, and really enjoyable movie to watch, I feel like it definitely lives up to its predecessor. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely, it ranks up among my favourite sci-fi movies, it is well done, exciting, and fun to watch. I like all of the characters, and I even think the obnoxious cockiness of the marines is kind of necessary, and it works really well. I think that everyone should see this movie, it is a great second installment in the franchise, as well as a great piece of film history. Again the practical effects are beautifully done, and it is beautiful seeing the dark artwork of the amazing HR Giger come alive. Please check back, as I will be reviewing the next two installments of the Alien series next, though unless someone decides to gift me Prometheus and Alien Covenant, or the AVP movies, I will be stopping at Alien Resurrection because that is all I currently own for the series. Again, grab some friends, and dim the lights and put on this amazing movie, but even though it is more sci-fi than horror, you might still want someone's hand to squeeze in a few parts.
