The third installment of the Alien franchise is alien 3, which came out in 1992, and it continues the story of Ripley and her continued encounter with the alien. In this installment it starts where the last movie ended, with the survivors of Aliens in cryosleep on their ship, but the ship encounters a problem and ejects the cryochambers in an escape pod. The pod crashes on a prison planet, that is inhabited entirely by men. We find that Ripley is the only survivor of the ship. Upon an autopsy on Newt we find that the alien has followed them, and it is alive in the prison. The story then follows the drama of the men having a woman present in their all-male world, and no one believes her about the alien, and well people start dying and shit hits the fan, and finally they turn to Ripley to help them survive. There are some great twists to the story, which I will not go into here, but it does add some character development, and an interesting plot twist. What this movie does right, is again the strong female heroine, and in this installment there is also a strong black man as well who holds the respect and admiration of the prisoners. Again we see HR Giger's amazing artwork coming alive, in a beautiful way. The sets are all dark and gothic, with an industrial look to it, which works so perfectly. The creature designs look beautiful, and we see a new variation of the alien in this installment, and we come to learn that as the alien bonds with different host's it develops different characteristics, in this case we see the alien bonding with a dog's DNA, and it looks like a xenomorph that is more dog-like. The movie has a dirty, sweaty, grittiness to it, which fits the setting of the movie perfectly. Also I must admit that Sigourney Weaver looks pretty damn good with a shaved head, it just makes her look even more bad ass, if that is at all possible. The story is compelling, and has great characters, who don't seem to fall into simple stereotypes as the characters in the first two movies seemed to do. There is a lot of great character development, not in just the main characters, but even the minor characters seem to grow as the events of the movie unfold, it feels like the movie seems to focus more on the characters rather than just on the action, and the horror. In a big departure from the earlier installments this movie primarily takes place on a planet, in a prison, rather than in space. This movie takes more time developing the characters, and tells a bit of deeper relationship of Ripley and the aliens, which I feel is kind of refreshing and helps to make the characters more real, and not just stereotypes. There is some great dialogue and story telling, and all in all it is a pretty great movie. However there are also some weak points as well, I felt that this movie is kinda slow, and kind of drags along, without the urgency and the building intense action of the other two installments. This movie does take more time developing the characters, but at a cost of the movie's pace. Though the climax of the movie is great, and dramatic, it feels like it was kind of a chore to get to that point, there was some great building action, but it seemed to be kind of lost in the drama of the prisoners. Also, this is the first of the series to start using CGI, and more technical effects, and honestly I feel the movie kind of suffers from it. I know that there were limitations on what could be done in 1992, and it looked much better on VHS, however on DVD it comes across looking fake and you could see the the outlines of the creature against the set, which now days would be considered bad editing, but at that point was probably the height of the technology. Honestly the earlier movies looked much better with all of the effects being practical. Do I recommend this movie? Yes, I do, however I feel it the weakest in the series so far, and I feel like it should only be watched with the other movies in the series, as I feel like as a stand alone, it is a bit slow, and dull honestly. For all of its weaknesses, it is honestly a great movie, just when compared to the high expectations that have been built up from the last two movies, I would just say that it is the weakest link in the chain of Alien movies. But definitely, settle down for and Alien marathon, and don't skip this great installment.
