For the fourth installment of the Alien franchise, the amazing Joss Whedon takes over on direction. He brings is amazing direction style to the movie, and also takes the series back to it's original styling that was strayed away from in the third movie. This movie also has a great cast lead by Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder, Ron Pearlman, and other great actors. The characters are perfectly cast, and well developed. So this installment is 200 years after Alien 3, and it takes place on a top secret military science ship. On this ship evil government scientists have cloned Ripley (as she died in the last movie), and she gives birth to a queen, but also when she is cloned she becomes a hybrid human/alien. So the scientists have a newborn queen which they use to breed aliens (of course nothing could go wrong with that idea, right?). So a ship of mercenary/pirates arrives with Ron Pearlman and Winona Ryder, and they have brought stolen cryochambers full of people that they sell to the leader of the science ship, these are used for hosts for the aliens to breed in (again how could this possibly go wrong?). Well, to sum it up, these aliens escape (big surprise there), and that is where the action begins, and the body count quickly rises. The main plot of the story is to escape back to their ship before they all get killed by aliens. Along the way there are some great plot twists, and heart pounding action. This movie gets a lot of bad reviews, and many people consider it the worst movie in the series. I will state right now that I actually strongly disagree with this, it is actually one of my favourites of the series. The characters all played their roles perfectly, Ron Pearlman always plays the perfect asshole, Winona Ryder has quite a complex character, and is the most humane of the characters with a very sensitive side, which suits her as an actress, and then Ripley's clone is well....peculiar to say the least. The story telling is great, the pace is fast and intense, there is really no lull in the action at all, once it kicks in, it is intense all the way up to the climax, which is one of my favourite scenes in the movie. The relationship between Ripley and the aliens has an interesting development that builds on the third movie, and is an interesting plot point. The CGI in this one is so much better done that Alien 3, it is smooth and looks really clean and believable, so a lot of progress was made between 1992 and 1997, and it works well. I feel that this movie did a great job at capturing the intensity of the sci-fi/action/horror as we follow these characters through this ship that is becoming more and more of a hellscape. HR Giger's art in here is absolutely beautiful, the creatures look fantastic, and there is some new types of aliens in this one too, as the species has continued to evolve. This is a movie that is hard to look away from, there is so much to see, and it is so fast paced. For flaws, honestly I am kind of hard pressed to find the flaws, I am sure you can read plenty of other reviews that rip it apart and shit all over it, but honestly I feel like the characters are well done and developed without the slowing down of pace, everyone plays their characters perfectly, the action is perfectly paced, the effects look smooth and beautiful...I don't know what really to say bad about this movie honestly. Again most critics disagree with me on this, and if you want to please put your opinions in the comments (just avoid spoilers please), it would be nice to see some people actually discuss this movie rather than just dismiss it. Would I recommend this movie? Yes, without a doubt I would recommend this movie, I absolutely love this, and I think it was a great way to end the original Alien Franchise, which was in a way resurrected with the AVP movies and then later with Prometheus and Alien Covenant (which I don't currently own, but will discuss later when I do acquire them). I highly recommend setting a day aside and marathon watching all of the original 4 Alien movies, they are all amazing movies, and I feel that this one brings it back to the feel of the original as a nice way to close out the original series. So I urge you to watch it for yourself, I absolutely love this one, but don't let critics tell you what to think about a movie, instead watch it and form your own opinion on it.
