Aeon Flux as released in 2005 and starred Charlize Theron. This movie is based off of the animated series that aired on Mtv's Liquid Television from 1991-1995. This is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi action movie, about a future world after life was destroyed on earth and only one city was left remaining. The Goodchild family developed a cure to the disease that was wiping out mankind, and thus the Goodchild regime was began. Though life is for the most part good in Bregna (the one remaining city), people have begun to go missing. Also not everyone supports the Goodchild regime and there is a group called the Monicans who oppose them. They are a small group of rebels who act in secrecy and with stealth, and Aeon Flux is one of those rebels. Aeon is tasked with assassinating Trevor Goodchild, the leader of the Goodchild regime. However during this assassination attempt we find that things are not as they appear, and the story evolves into something a lot more complex. Being that this is based off of a very amazing animated series, and honestly doesn't stand up in comparison to that series, I want to try not to spend the whole review comparing the two and explaining how it doesn't live up to its source material. I want to look at it as a stand alone work, though if you want to discuss and compare the two feel free to do so in the comments. First off this is a very sexy movie, I absolutely love the costumes, the sets, and the overall look of the film. The action is also beautifully done, this is not something that I am usually into, being that it is very CGI driven effects, but it really works with this film, because of the source that it is based on. I think the strongest part of this movie is Charlize Theron's fantastic portrayal of Aeon, her actions and her look really does bring this amazing character to life. The story on the other hand is very watered down compared to the very twisted and bizarre feel of the original, but I feel that Theron did her best with what she had to work with, and that her more than any other actor brought her character to life. The look and feel of this movie though is really well done, like seeing it separate from the series, it is just a very beautiful looking science fiction movie, that is hard to take your eyes off of. I like that rather than a dark gritty feel that many post apocalyptic movies, has, that this one has more of a beautiful utopic look on the surface, but as you dig deeper and go under the surface of the utopia you find that there is a darker reality. Now I said before that the story compared to the series is a let down, but to actually look at the story as it's own work, it is honestly a good science fiction story, and it is honestly a fun and intelligent movie. I really do like this movie, I really love the idea of a story that takes place in a utopic environment, but seeing that underneath that utopia that things are not quite as they appear, that there is a rot at its core. Just over all this movie has a great look, some fantastic action, sets, and costumes. I like that the story is constantly evolving, and the story keeps twisting, which keeps the story interesting. Though there are times that the story slows down a little too much, and kind of drags at points. One other thing that needs to be mentioned is that all of the strongest characters are powerful females, including the main character Aeon, I always love to see powerful female heroines. Would I recommend this film? Definitely! I get that this movie bombed in the theatres, and I get that the critics kind of shit on it, but I honestly think that viewers should go into it as a great action packed sci-fi action movie, to look take in this beautiful sexy film as a work of science fiction, rather than a film adaptation of a bizarre animated series. I mean in an animated series, they can do things, that could never be done in a movie, so just take this as either a stand alone, or as just a long episode of the show, rather than a replacement or a live action movie trying to reboot the series. Honestly this movie is beautiful, and just sit back and enjoy it. Definitely recommend for anyone that is a fan of post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie.
